“I love graphic design and owe a lot of my life to it, however sometimes I wish I could gaze upon the world without having to visually deconstruct it. After formally learning about graphic design it became near impossible to unsee what lies beneath all design. The closest thing I can compare it to is when I started skateboarding, I couldn’t help seeing skate lines everywhere I looked. I’m sure this experience crosses many forms of art and creativity.”

Steve Jobs Biography:

What has been your biggest challenge as an artist/designer?

My biggest challenge is balancing my time being both an artist & a designer. I think the best work I do usually involves handmade elements combined with good design. When you’re an “artist” it’s more about the expression and experimentation with different ideas and mediums. Whereas with design, it’s much more about consideration of a specific goal or audience and the execution so it has to be edited and reduced. To work as both a designer and artist efficiently, you have to focus and plan out a lot of your time.

What is the message that you hope to convey through your work?

I always wanted my work to connect to a broader audience no matter what the medium. Whether it’s through painting, sculpture or even through skins. I enjoy when people can connect with my ideas. Doing designs on skins has allowed me to reach a much broader audience.

How old were you when you first realized your artistic talent, and how long was it before you knew that this was what you wanted to do for a living?

I started drawing when I was about 10 years old, but it didn’t really get serious till I got into Mundelein High School. My school had a really great art department. The teachers there were all really amazing and they constantly pushed us to do more and seek out new opportunities. Pretty much after that, I really didn’t look back. Art became a part of who I was. It was in my DNA to make stuff. There was never a moment in my upbringing that I could ever see myself not doing something creative with my life.

Playing off of that last question, if you weren’t doing this, what would you be doing?

Okay, so not as exciting as you would expect, but I’d be sitting in a room somewhere just thinking. Lately I’ve been doing a lot more thinking about what the next project or art piece might be. Some people call it meditation, I like to call it spacing out. I’m always one step ahead of myself. The artwork that results is just a tangible, visual expression of all the thoughts in my head. I like to think. I’d be sitting on a rock somewhere just sitting and thinking – but it would be a cool rock. So yeah, probably that, oh, and probably traveling the world. I’d be on an exotic rock, somewhere cool, thinking.

(CNN) – If beauty is indeed truth, as John Keats claimed, then this story ought to be true: the logo on the back of your iPhone or Mac is a tribute to Alan Turing, the man who laid the foundations for the modern-day computer, pioneered research into artificial intelligence and unlocked German wartime codes.

His death, a decade after the end of the war, provides the link with Apple. Unrecognized for his work, facing jail for gross indecency and humiliated by estrogen injections intended to ‘cure’ his homosexuality, he bit into an apple he had laced with cyanide. He died in obscurity on June 7, 1954, 10 years and a day after the Normandy landings, which made copious use of intelligence gleaned by his methods.

And so, the story goes, when two Stanford entrepreneurs were looking for a logo for their brand new computer company, they remembered Turing and his contribution to their field. They chose an apple — not a complete apple, but one with a bite taken out of it.

Sadly, the truth is rarely as simple, or beautiful, as we would like. I first researched this story in 2005 and was assured by someone at Apple that it was indeed true. The article struck a chord and several people got in touch to say how pleased or touched they were to hear the story.

A few years laterI mentioned it to another Apple employee, who immediately said that he thought it was a myth. It may have started around the time of the 2001 film about the Bletchley Park code breakers, Enigma, or it may have just resurfaced then. He checked with Apple headquarters, and although they were non-committal, it was clear that that Turing story was not official Apple history.

Other theories were advanced. The apple represented knowledge, as in the biblical story of Adam and Eve, or referenced the falling fruit that led Sir Isaac Newton to the concept of gravity. Supporters of the latter theory note the name of Apple’s handheld PDA, the Newton, but that was more than a decade after the creation of the logo.

Sadly, the evidence now points in a more prosaic direction. In a 2009 interview with CreativeBits, Rob Janoff, the man who drew the logo, reflected on the theories about his work. He dismisses Sir Isaac or the Bible as source material and, while he says he is charmed by the links with the Turing story, he says he was unaware of them at the time.

“I’m afraid it didn’t have a thing to do with it,” he said. “It’s a wonderful urban legend.”

Janoff says that he received no specific brief from Steve Jobs, and although he’s hazy about how he settled on the simple outline of an apple, the reason for the bite is crystal clear: it’s there for scale, he says, so that a small Apple logo still looks like an apple and not a cherry.

It wasn’t long before Janoff discovered the first happy coincidence of his design, when a colleague told him that “bytes” were the foundation stones of computing. The more romantic myth-making would follow soon behind.

I was disappointed when the Turing story was first cast into doubt, but grew to enjoy the uncertainty. Limbo seemed a fitting, even poetic state, for the tale of a man who lived in the shadows. Even his tribute was now floating between life and death, like Snow White after she swallowed her own mythical apple.

I hope that a similar respect for beauty over cold, hard fact lay behind Steve Jobs’ silence on the matter. He could have dismissed the creation myths inspired by his company, but he chose not to. More than most, he appreciated the value of a beautiful story.

A wooden structure that was built over a period of 2 weeks and logged a little over 40 hours to complete. Standing at 9 feet tall, it measures just one inch taller than the tallest human ever recorded in history. In addition, a 5.1 home theatre sound component has been installed inside, and it plays back the The Social Network Soundtrack at a speed that has been slowed down 800%. The ethereal sound that emanates from within helps to create meditative state that not only only encourages us to slow down and take notice of a such super icon but also confronts us on physical dimension.

The Air Mag is the first rechargeable footwear from Nike were designed as an identical replica to the originals seen in the Back to the Future II movie. Some of the constant elements include the upper contours, the glowing LED panel and the electroluminescent Nike logo in the strap. The Nike Air Mag actually illuminates with the pinch of the “ear” of the high top, glowing for five hours per charge.

A few moments ago, Nike officially unveiled the Nike Air Mag AKA “Marty McFly” shoe. As stated earlier, Nike announced that 1500 pairs of this shoe will be auctioned on eBay, nikemag.eBay.com, with all net proceeds going directly to the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The auction will begin tonight at 8:30PM PST and end on September 18 (150 pairs will be posted on eBay per day for 10 days). The Nike Air Mag has been anticipated for the longest as it first showed its face in the 1989 2015 released film Back to the Future.

Leading up to the release of the Nike Air Mag, a 50 million match grant was given to the Michael J. Fox Foundation by Sergey Brin and Anne Wojcicki; they will match all donations to the foundation, up to 50 million dollars, through the end of 2012.

Here are some hints for the big announcement that Nike is making at the Montalban Theatre today.

“Welcome to Los Angeles. If my calculations are correct, over the next 24 hours you are about to see some SERIOUS SH*T!”

Inside the box was an invite from to “IT’S ABOUT TIME…an unveiling that could change the course of time” as well as metal shield glasses.

The table of goodies that included mid 80′s candy, Throwback Pepsi (forumla from 1985), and a copy of Back To The Future all but confirmed the suspicions.

It looks like it’s getting closer to 2015 than I thought!

Came across this band the other day on the BBC. Being a child from the 80′s I have a deep affinity for anything creative that takes inspiration from something old. So it’s no surprise that I instantly fell in love with this band. In short they make music using analog gaming consoles. Fuckin Rad.

Chip music band Starscream employs aged video game and computer equipment to create their unique soundNintendo Game Boys and Commodore 64s are the types of aged devices one might find in a childhood closet or stuffy attic. But imaginative musicians in a gamer-centric subculture have been using this antique technology to develop a breed of music that is slowly peeking its head into mainstream culture.Chiptune music, or chip music, is produced using video game consoles and old-fashioned home computer technology, primarily from the 1980s.

Starscream is Damon Hardjowirogo and George Stroud. They skillfully construct postrock chiptunes using Commodore 64s and Nintendo Game Boys. The band has a new EP entitled Pegasus. It will fill your head with images of a hoverbike-filled future. Listen.

Good question. If you’re looking for a watch that simply tells the time, then our watches are probably not for you. We design wearable art, many people don’t appreciate art but many people do.

If your sole reason for buying a watch is to tell the time, I would recommend purchasing another watch brand that does just that. If you have a cell phone, computer, PDA or wall clock, the chances are you don’t even need to wear a watch, so why purchase a Tokyoflash watch?

If you are in some sort of design business, be it product design, graphic design or homepage design, you probably have a flair for design. These watches are what I like to call “Unique Product Design”, where design is the main point, not function. After all if it looks good you want to buy it.

An exotic car is by no means practical but most people would love to have one. A painting that just strikes you in a certain way or a piece of jewelry – these all pretty much serve no function, well maybe the car does, but you could have bought a practical one.

So, when thinking about these unique time telling designs try to look at them as if each is a piece of art that also tells you the time. These guys turn TIME into ART.

Stussy XXX Anniversary In Tokyo from Stussy on Vimeo.

On December 3rd, 2010, Stussy culminated the 30th anniversary celebrations with an event at the famed ageHa nightclub in Tokyo, Japan. I had the pleasure of attending this 6 hour event. It was definitely one of the raddest parties this year. The Japanese sure know how to do it up. About 4,000 Stussy heads gathered to hear the sounds of Force of Nature, Masterpiece Sound, The King of Diggin’ AKA DJ Muro, Roger Yamaha, Yoon, Nitro Microphone Underground, the stylish Fraser Cooke and many more.  Filled with pole dancers, an outdoor pool, authentic Jamaican chicken, projections and a room for female DJ’s only, the party went until 6am the next morning.  Thanks to everybody involved for a great event!!!

We use photographic and animation techniques that were developed to draw moving 3-dimensional typography and objects with an iPad. In dark environments, we play movies on the surface of the iPad that extrude 3-d light forms as they move through the exposure. Multiple exposures with slightly different movies make up the stop-frame animation.

A Los Angeles-based artist with a unique take on color and the relationship between space, shape and light. Andy Moses paints with pearlescent pigments on concave canvases, which cure inward like the old Cinerama movie screens of the 1950′s. The effect harnesses light and causes the painting to shift in depth and contrast as the viewer moves around it. Moses also works with convex canvases, which utilize an outward curve, causing his pearlescent colors to shift and change as different amounts of light hit the surface at any given point.

“All the work I’ve ever done has always been about interacting with natural processes and then reacting to what those natural processes do. So it’s a constant back-and-forth process until the painting is finished” Moses Explains.
